The course focuses on reading, translation, and analysis of the Renaissance tractise De veritate religionis Christianae (On the thruth of Christian religion) of the important Dutch philosopher Hugo Grotius. Next to the discussed text of the tractise the students will read also other texts of Grotius (letters, theatre, ...) as well as renaissance texts of other authors. The aim of the course is to let the students make acquaintance with one of the most widely read renaissance texts and to give an insight into the renaissance debate on the co-existence of the churches. The subject is a result of the ESF Operational Programme Education for Competitiveness, reg. no. CZ 1.07/2.3.00/20.0026.
The students will make acquaintance with the work of the important European humanist and protagonist of the irenic movement in the co-existence of churches. Their ability to translate humanist Latin will be improved and they will get some insight into the intellectual culture of that period.
