Course content
|
Seminars will focus on selected fields in Roman society (historiography, democracy and tyranny, imperialism, religion and mythology, gender roles, slavery, everyday life) and their afterlife via analysis of primary sources (works of ancient authors) and chapters from modern publications and articles connected to the topics of the seminars. The programme will be presented during the first session and accessible via Moodle. Readings for seminars (primary sources/secondary literature) as well as other resources will also be available on Moodle. A preliminary program: 1) Introduction to the syllabus + tips for scholarly reading and note-taking 2) Introduction to primary sources, literature, reference works, online tools + paraphrasing 3) Mr. Rome. The myths of the beginning 4) Republic: system 5) Gracchi brothers: reformers or populists? 6) How (not) to do a coup d'état. Catilina and Cicero 7) Art as propaganda 8) Stench and noise. Life in the ancient city. 9) Cherche la femme. Or the man. Notions of masculinity and femininity 10) Myths and their reception in art 11) A satyr meets St Anthony. The old and new religions 12) Final test 13) Io Saturnalia!

Description of the phenomenona and processes in the Roman society which influenced the development of the humankind. Ability of the analysis and interpretation of fundamental sources and literature for the topics of the seminars.
