The lecture provides a comprehensive overview of German syntax: 1. The subject matter of syntax and the definition of basic concepts (syntactic categories, relations and functions; sentence; sentence types according to the speaker's communicative intent; formal sentence types; sentence patterns). 2. Approaches to sentence analysis (traditional syntax, valency and dependency syntax, generative grammar). 3. The grammatical structure of the simple sentence: the verb as the core of the sentence and its semantic analysis; verb complements and other sentence constituents; attributes/modifiers; semantic cases (thematic roles); word order. Optional additional topic: Developmental trends in German syntax and current research issues. The lecture focuses primarily on traditional syntax, while also introducing the main features of other syntactic theories and approaches to sentence analysis. For key issues, attention is given to a contrastive comparison with corresponding phenomena in Czech.
