Course content
|
The seminar examines selected nineteenth-century prose narratives written in German within the literary-historical contexts of the Biedermeier period, the Vormärz, and German and Austrian Realism. The introductory section presents the key concepts and the cultural and literary contexts of the period. Subsequent sessions are devoted to the joint reading, analysis, and discussion of selected works. Students work with prose texts by Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, Eduard Mörike, Franz Grillparzer, Jeremias Gotthelf, Adalbert Stifter, Ferdinand von Saar, Jakob Julius David, and Theodor Storm. Particular attention is paid to narrative techniques, character construction, the thematic and poetic features of the individual texts, and their relationship to the social, cultural, and historical transformations of the nineteenth century. The seminar includes the preparation of worksheets on the lives and works of selected authors, their presentation, and their collaborative use within the seminar group. Course materials consist of primary texts, worksheets, assignments, and other materials made available in Moodle. These are supplemented by worksheets prepared by students, scholarly articles, monographs, and other secondary literature used for independent preparation and the interpretation of individual works.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the seminar is to introduce students to selected nineteenth-century prose narratives written in German and to place them within the literary-historical contexts of the Biedermeier period, the Vormärz, and German and Austrian Realism. Particular attention is paid to the development of shorter prose genres, their thematic and poetic features, and the ways in which literary texts reflect the social, cultural, and historical transformations of the nineteenth century. Students work with selected prose texts by Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, Eduard Mörike, Franz Grillparzer, Jeremias Gotthelf, Adalbert Stifter, Ferdinand von Saar, Jakob Julius David, and Theodor Storm. The seminar develops their ability to read literary texts closely, formulate well-supported interpretations, and compare different forms of narrative writing in nineteenth-century German and Austrian literature. It also develops their ability to locate and critically use scholarly literature and to present the results of their independent work clearly.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to identify the fundamental characteristics of prose from the Biedermeier period, the Vormärz, and German and Austrian Realism and place them within the literary-historical, social, and cultural contexts of the nineteenth century. They will be able to analyse and interpret selected prose texts, formulate well-supported interpretations, and compare different narrative techniques, thematic concerns, and poetic strategies. Students will be familiar with the works of selected authors, particularly Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, Eduard Mörike, Franz Grillparzer, Jeremias Gotthelf, Adalbert Stifter, Ferdinand von Saar, Jakob Julius David, and Theodor Storm. They will be able to locate and critically use scholarly literature, prepare an academically grounded worksheet with a bibliography, and use it to guide collaborative work and discussion in the seminar.

Prerequisites
|
The course is intended for students enrolled in German Studies programmes as well as for other interested students at Palacký University. A basic knowledge of nineteenth-century German-language literature is advantageous but is not a prerequisite for completing the course. German language proficiency at approximately B2 level is expected for reading and interpreting primary texts, working with scholarly literature, preparing a worksheet, and participating actively in seminar discussions.

Assessment methods and criteria

Students prepare continuously for each seminar topic by reading the assigned primary texts and studying the relevant scholarly literature. They participate actively in the joint analysis of texts and in academic discussion. One of the course requirements is the individual or collaborative preparation of a worksheet on the life and work of a selected author. The worksheet is based on scholarly literature, includes a bibliography of the sources used, and is discussed with the lecturer in advance. Students introduce the worksheet in the seminar and use it to guide collaborative work and discussion within the group. The course concludes with an individual oral discussion in which students reflect on one of the authors or works covered in the seminar and demonstrate their ability to formulate a well-supported interpretation. To receive credit for the course, students must attend the seminar regularly and come prepared, participate actively in class, prepare and guide the work based on the worksheet, and complete the final individual oral discussion.
