Texts of Realism: The Structure and Critique of Bourgeois Society The nineteenth century is widely regarded as the century of the bourgeoisie. Following the French Revolution, the traditional ruling estatesthe nobility and the clergygradually lost their dominant position, while the economic influence of the bourgeoisie, strengthened by remarkable advances in science and technology, continued to grow and eventually translated into political power. This development led to an increasing differentiation of bourgeois society and the emergence of new structures of power and authority, which realist literature from the mid-nineteenth century onwards described with great precision while also subjecting them to critical scrutiny. The seminar examines these structures of social power and the individual challenges faced by members of bourgeois society through the analysis of literary texts written between 1840 and 1890. The selection of texts reflects the diversity of realist literature. In addition to classical novellas, students will read works representing genres such as the village tale, the fantastic tale, animal stories, children's literature, and science fiction. At the same time, the seminar focuses primarily on authors who belong to the literary canon, including Berthold Auerbach, Joseph Julius David, Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Theodor Fontane, Friedrich Hebbel, Wilhelm Raabe, and Theodor Storm.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the seminar is to familiarise students with the political, social, and economic conditions of nineteenth-century bourgeois society through the analysis of selected literary texts. Students will examine both works that affirm the values and norms of bourgeois society and texts that critically question them. Through literary analysis, they will develop an understanding of the value system of bourgeois society as well as its internal contradictions and paradoxes and their impact on the lives of individuals.
Students will gain an understanding of the political, social, and economic conditions of nineteenth-century bourgeois society and their representation in realist literature. They will be able to analyse and interpret literary texts within their historical and social context, identify literary representations of social structures, and critically reflect on the values, conflicts, and paradoxes of bourgeois society.

The seminar is intended for all students of the Palacký University.

Student performance, Seminar Work
A maximum of two absences per semester is permitted. Students are expected to participate actively in seminar discussions, complete the assigned preparatory work, and read the required texts.
