Course content
|
The lecture examines the literature and culture of the Biedermeier and Vormärz periods in the German-speaking countries from the Congress of Vienna to the revolutions of 1848. Individual topics are placed within their broader political, social, cultural, and intellectual contexts. Particular attention is paid to the consequences of the Congress of Vienna, Restoration and censorship, changes in bourgeois society, everyday culture during the Biedermeier period, the politicisation of literature during the Vormärz, the Young Germany movement, the development of drama, prose, and poetry, and selected authors and works of the period. The lecture also includes work with shorter literary texts and extracts from works by major authors. The main course materials consist of handouts prepared by the lecturer for each topic and made available in Moodle. These are supplemented by selected primary texts, scholarly articles, and chapters from recommended secondary literature.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the lecture is to introduce students to the literature and culture of the Biedermeier and Vormärz periods in the German-speaking countries. Particular attention is paid to the development of society, culture, and literature from the Congress of Vienna to the revolutionary year of 1848. Students acquire a basic overview of the main characteristics of the period, its political, social, and intellectual context, and selected authors, genres, and literary texts. The course also develops their ability to distinguish between different literary and cultural tendencies of the period, to place literary works within broader historical contexts, and to interpret selected texts.
Students will gain insight into literature and literary criticism in selected periods as well as knowledge on topics dealt with in German language literature. A special emphasis is laid on the knowledge of the historical and cultural-historical context.

Prerequisites
|
The course is intended for students enrolled in German Studies programmes as well as for other interested students at Palacký University. A basic knowledge of nineteenth-century European history and culture is advantageous but is not a prerequisite for completing the course. German language proficiency at approximately B2 level is expected for work with selected primary and secondary texts.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Mark, Oral exam
Students prepare for the examination on the basis of the lecture content, the handouts available in Moodle, and the assigned primary and secondary texts. The course is completed with an individual oral examination lasting approximately 20 minutes. During the examination, students demonstrate their knowledge of the main topics covered in the course, their ability to place the literary and cultural phenomena discussed within their political, social, and historical contexts, and their familiarity with the selected texts. Attendance at lectures is not compulsory.
