Course content
|
During the lecture first, the common epoch scheme from the Enlightenment to exile literature is presented, whereby the characteristics of the literature and culture of the Bohemian lands in comparison to Germany and the Habsburg Monarchy are demonstrated. In the last third of the lecture genres such as borderland novels (Grenzlandroman) or literary fantasy (Literarische Phantastik) and topics such as the First World War, image of the Czechs are discussed since they are of particular importance for the region.

|
The aim of the lecture is to familiarise students with the principal developments in the culture and literature of the Bohemian Lands from the Enlightenment to the Second World War and to provide them with an overview of the socio-political contexts of the individual literary periods. Particular emphasis is placed on the distinctive development of German-language culture in the Bohemian Lands, which evolved through its interaction with Czech culture. Students will also become familiar with intercultural and intracultural methodological approaches that offer new perspectives on German-language literature of the Bohemian Lands beyond the traditional distinction between Prague German literature and regional literature.
Students will gain an overview of the development of German-language literature and culture in the Bohemian Lands from the Enlightenment to the Second World War and of their social and political contexts. They will be able to place literary works within their historical, cultural, and intercultural contexts and explain the distinctive features of German-language culture in the Bohemian Lands. They will also acquire a basic understanding of intercultural and intracultural approaches to literary analysis and develop the ability to critically reflect on both traditional and contemporary concepts of the history of German-language literature in the Bohemian Lands.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam
Successful completion of an oral examination assessing the knowledge acquired during the lecture. The examination will also assess students' knowledge of the required reading, selected individually from a reading list provided by the instructor.
