Course content
|
The aim of this lecture is to introduce students to "systemic linguistics," that is, to the various levels of language (sound, word, sentence, text) and the methods used to study them. The primary method is the one developed by structuralists. Introduction: Linguistics: subject matter, objectives, methods, history of the field Language as a system: principles of the structuralist conception of language Linguistic levels: forms of linguistic units: Phonetics / phonology Morphology and word formation Classification of words: the study of parts of speech Syntax 1: Traditional syntax: sentence components / subject and predicate / definition of a sentence Syntax 2: Constituent analysis / valency grammar Text linguistics Content of linguistic units: Semantics Pragmatics On the relationship between form and content: Selected problem areas: Lexicology and phraseology Word order Other topics will include the relationship between linguistics and other sciences and the classification of linguistic disciplines; fundamental questions in linguistics will also be presented (the nature of the linguistic sign, the relationship between language and reality, and the relationship between language and thought).

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this lecture is to introduce students to "systemic linguistics," that is, to the various levels of language (sound, word, sentence, text) and the methods used to study them. The primary method is the one developed by structuralists. The lecture is based on the model of language as a system, on its structurelevels, units, their relationships, dependencies, and processes of cooperation. It focuses on the functions of language and linguistic units, as well as on the fundamental principles governing the relationships between language, reality, and the active role of the language user. It addresses issues of semantics, as well as questions of function and content. It emphasizes the connection between synchronic and diachronic aspects, the nature of developmental trends, the causes and course of language change, and the relationship between the spoken and written forms of natural language. These topics are illustrated with examples from Indo-European and Semitic languages.
Students will become familiar with the various levels of language (sound, word, sentence, text) and the methods used to analyze them.
