Travelling through the Eastern Periphery: Galicia and Bukovina from a Literary Perspective Throughout their incorporation into the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy (1772-1918), Galicia and Bukovina struggled with the reputation of being remote and underdeveloped borderlands adjoining the "semi-Asiatic" Russian Empire. This perception is reflected in often autobiographically inspired short stories and novels, as well as in travel writing and journalistic reportage. Alongside the widespread rural poverty, these texts also document the gradual development of urban centres, above all Lemberg and Czernowitz, and the region's remarkable ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity. Through the discussion of selected literary examples, including works by Karl Emil Franzos and Joseph Roth, the workshop will introduce participants to this unique cultural landscape of Eastern Europe.
