The seminar will focus on the cinematic representation of artists. Throughout the history of cinema, biographical and aesthetic portrayals of painters have predominated, as film and painting employ similar strategies of visual representation. This emphasis will also be reflected in the seminar, which will feature films about painters (including Egon Schiele (2016) and Mr. Turner (2014)) and a female painter (Paula (2016)). For comparison, the programme will also include films focusing on writers, including Vor der Morgenröte (Stefan Zweig, 2016).
