The Multi-Ethnic Society of Northern Moravia through the Ages: The Example of the Town of Krnov/Jägerndorf The core component of the course is a two-day field excursion (date to be confirmed) to the North Moravian town of Krnov, which serves as an illuminating example of the coexistence of different ethnic and religious communities and of the social and economic transformations associated with the historical developments of the twentieth century. These developments are reflected not only in autobiographical writings by local authors but also in a range of biographical and historical sources relating to Krnov and prominent figures connected with the region. Before the excursion, students will read selected texts or excerpts and prepare a short presentation (10-15 minutes), which they will deliver during the excursion. Depending on the number of participants, presentations may also be prepared and presented in pairs. The specific sites to be visited during the excursion will be announced in an information email at the beginning of the semester and will depend on the number of enrolled students. The excursion is funded primarily by the DAAD and, where applicable, by the Austrian Centre. Participants will be expected to contribute to part of the costs.

The aim of the course is to familiarise participants with selected authors of Moravian German literature, German-speaking figures of cultural life, and the history of the Northern Moravia region, which forms the focus of the seminar, through literary (often autobiographical) and historically relevant texts. Participants will develop their ability to analyse texts and place them within their literary-historical and regional context, while gaining a basic understanding of how to identify and interpret traces of the German-speaking cultural heritage in Czech towns.
