Course content

A guest lecture series providing students with insights into selected historical and contemporary developments in Austrian and other German-language literature, culture, intellectual history, art history, and social, political, and media affairs. Provisional programme for the winter semester 2026: In the second week of the semester, provisionally Wednesday, 30 September, 5:00 p.m.: Short introductory meeting. 6 October 2026, probably at 5:00 p.m.: Lecture by translator Gabriela Kalinová on the occasion of the opening of an exhibition on Rainer Maria Rilke (5-16 October, Department of German Studies). 21 October 2026, 11:30 a.m.: Lecture by translator Michaela Škultéty, to be held as part of Dr Cioska's seminar. Subject to prior arrangement, participation may also be possible as part of the Konversation seminar and the lectures Übersetzungskritik and Překlad jako kulturní proces. 3 November 2026, 5:00 p.m.: Author reading by Austrian writer Dimitré Dinev, provisionally planned to take place at Café Amadeus; details to be confirmed. 26 November 2026, 11:30 a.m.: Lecture/seminar by Jan Budňák, to be held as part of the RLT seminar. Participation by students from the Konversation seminar will also be arranged if possible.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the series of lectures delivered by visiting lecturers is to provide students with an insight into selected historical and contemporary manifestations of primarily Austrian, as well as other German-language, literature, culture, history, intellectual history, art history, and social, political, and media developments.
Students will acquire an overview of selected historical and contemporary developments in Austrian and other German-language literature, culture, and society. They will be able to place the topics discussed within their broader historical and cultural context, critically reflect on their significance, and discuss them in an informed academic context.

Prerequisites
|
The lecture series is open to all students of Palacký University with a good command of German.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Written exam
If possible, participation in lectures/workshops, successful completion of a final test (at least 55 %) to verify the knowledge acquired during the events held as part of the cycle.
