Course content
The lecture provides an introductory overview of the development of philosophy from Antiquity to the twentieth century. Its principal focus is on the philosophy of language, particularly philosophical reflections on the nature, possibilities, and limitations of language. Selected issues in epistemology are also addressed. The lecture begins with a chronological survey of ancient philosophy (the Pre-Socratics, Socrates/Plato, and Aristotle). It continues with a brief introduction to medieval philosophy and a more detailed discussion of Enlightenment philosophy (Descartes, Locke, Leibniz, Kant, and Hamann). The second part of the course examines the emergence of modern philosophy of language from the late nineteenth century onwards (Frege, the linguistic turn, Wittgenstein, Heidegger, Quine, and Davidson). The lecture concludes with an overview of current and unresolved issues in the philosophy of language and an introduction to the linguistic and philosophical foundations of artificial intelligence.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the lecture is to introduce the students to the basic topics regarding philosophy with an emphasis placed on German speaking countries and to provide students with ability to work with original philosophical texts as well as with scholarly literature. Another aim of the course is to give students a basic overview of key philosophical topics and their historical development.
Students will gain an overview of the fundamental topics of philosophy and their interrelationships, the methods employed in its major areas, and the history of philosophy. They will also develop an understanding of philosophy, particularly the philosophy of language, as a higher-level reflective framework for other disciplines. In addition, they will become familiar with the fundamentals of logical reasoning and the principal introductory literature in the field.
