Quality TV: From Hill Street Blues to Watchmen. This seminar focuses on the phenomenon of quality TV, which can be understood as a genre, a production category, an aesthetic concept, a marketing strategy, or all of the above. Although quality TV is often considered a contemporary phenomenon, it has a much longer history. The term began to be used in the 1980s, and it has changed throughout its forty-year history. This course will focus on what quality TV means in different eras of television, using specific examples to illustrate its evolution.
