Course content
- Terminological clarification: media studies, cultural studies, journalism, media - Mass media, institutions of media and mass media - Typology of media, new media - Techno-deterministic view of the media, Toronto school - Social criticism, theory of ideology, the cultural industry: Marxism, Frankfurt School - The media and their social and ideological function 2 half of the 20th Century: Habermas, Debord - Media content vs. context, reading the media text, Birmingham School - Theory of representations of reality, media construction of reality, hyperreality (Berger - Luckmann, Boorstin, Baudrillard) - Media theory: possibilities and limits of descriptive models, normative theory and alternative media

Learning outcomes
The seminar focuses on the theoretical concepts of media and media studies, mainly deals with an overview of various media schools, methodologies and typologies of media. Students will become familiar with current trends in the field of media studies, as well as with their historical development
