Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to familiarize the student with the basic aspects of modern editorial practice, with an interdisciplinary overlap to the related areas of textology, typography, book culture, economics, law and marketing, and at the same time to equip him/her with the competences necessary for professional work with text at the editorial level. In the thematic units, attention is gradually focused on: the specifics of the book market with regard to the economic structures and systems of (especially European) society; the strategy of editorial planning and the conceptual profiling of editions and publishing houses. The economics of the book title and methods of manuscript acquisition; copyright issues and other related legal regulations of publishing activities; analysis of distribution models; marketing models and their use in publishing practice, including promotional and publicity strategies. This part of the knowledge is conveyed through a combination of teaching forms: lectures, presentations and discussions. However, self-study of the literature on the topic is also required. As far as the editorial treatment of the text is concerned, attention is focused on: basic textological and editorial solutions, editorial treatment of the text at the linguistic, formal and typographical level, taking into account the genre specifics of the texts (professional monographs, children's literature, book publicity, translated fiction, etc.) and historical and current conventions of book culture (e.g. standardized book structure and the possibilities of its transcendence, etc.). In this area, the student is expected to prepare independently on the basis of the study guide and the recommended literature, while the tutorials mainly discuss the controversial moments and specific dilemmas that the processing of individual texts presents. The student's home preparation includes independent editing of assigned manuscript fragments. In the tutorials, the work with the excerpts is evaluated and various solutions are considered in the form of discussion. It is therefore desirable that students come to tutorials prepared, with edited manuscripts, so that feedback can be given. Only if the student does not attend the tutorial can he/she consult his/her work with the tutor individually.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam
For each tutorial, the student is obliged to study the designated part of the syllabus (see the tutorial schedule) and to complete correspondence assignments focused on editing and proofreading. The assignments must be uploaded to Moodle no later than one week before the end of the exam period. Students bring their redacted texts (printed or in a notebook) to tutorials where we discuss the proposed changes together. Students who have already submitted their assignment in Moodle are then given feedback in the form of a sample redacted text and accompanying commentary. Students who have not been to the tutorial have the opportunity to get feedback by comparing their own solution and the sample solution. Any questions or uncertainties can then be discussed with the tutor in any way. Similarly, the feedback files are used in case some of the problems are not fully or sufficiently commented on in the tutorial. The subject of the tutorials is therefore: - Discussion of the studied part of the tutorial (student questions, clarification of the material). - evaluation of the correspondence assignments - joint editing of further texts
