- terminological clarification: media studies, cultural studies, journalism, media - media, mass media, sociological construct and institution of media; normative media theory - media typology, new media - empirical media research, Lazarsfeld's research on radio and his methodological legacy - social criticism, theory of ideology, culture industry: Marxism, Frankfurt School - media and their social and ideological functions in the second half of the 20th century: Habermas, Debord - media content vs. meaning, media content as text, Birmingham School - Techno-deterministic view of media, Toronto School - Convergence of cultural and technological lines of thinking: participatory culture H. Jenkins, transmedia narrative
