Course content
1. Languages, dialects, and varieties; 2. Social and speech communities; 3. Pragmatic aspects of language; 4. Language variation and change; 5. Ethnographic approaches in linguistics; 6. Discourse analysis; 7. Languages in contact; 8. Structural consequences of social factors; 9. Language, the nation, and beyond; 10. Language, gender, and sexuality; 11. Language, society, and education; 12. Language policy and planning.

The aim of the course is to place practical language skills (which students have acquired in other courses) in a broader social and cultural context.
