Course content
The seminar deals with the relation of a spoken text and its theoretical background; Paul Grice?s conversational analysis theory, co-operation principle, conversational maxims of quality, quantity, manner and relation are only used as a basis for semantic and pragmatic analysis of modal particles in dialogues between a doctor and a patient. Materials for analysis will be provided by the Czech National Corpus of spoken language. The analysis will focus on modal verbs, adverbials particles etc.

Learning outcomes
Analysis of a dialogue between a doctor and a patient on the background of conversational analysis and theory of conversation maxims.
Refined knowledge on the field of pragmatics (conversational analysis, text linguistics and speech acts theory).
Prerequisites
Introduction to Linguistics, Introduction to Sociolinguistics, or Introduction to Pragmatics (theory of speech acts, the co - operation principle, conversation maxims, theory of conversational implicatures and presuppositions).
