Tento kurs zkoumá proměny ideje Západu v americké literatuře a kultuře jako formativního faktoru americké národní identity a americké demokracie. Vybrané texty zahrnují eseje, povídky a romány populární literatury i experimentální beletrie.
Porozumění role Západu jako kulturně-geografického činitele v procesu formování americké národní identity a americké literatury. Seznámení se s vývojem mytologizace Západu. Porozumění podílu literatury na procesu mytologizace Západu. Hlubší pochopení vztahu mezi textem a kontextem. Rozšíření všeobecného přehledu o rozmanitosti americké kultury. Rozvinutí schopnosti kritického myšlení a odborné polemiky v písemné i ústní formě.
