Learning outcomes
The aim of the lecture and seminar is to familiarize students with key theoretical texts in 20th- and 21st-century art history and to develop their ability to critically read academic texts, with an emphasis on current trends in Anglo-American art history methodology. The selection of texts includes works on methodology, art history, visual culture, cultural studies, and art theory and criticism, and will focus on demonstrating the diversity of current discourse on art and the roots of current trends (new art history, visual culture, post-isms, contemporary art criticism, paradigm shifts) . Part of the course will also be devoted to selected figures in Czech art history. The seminar is structured around reading texts from class to class and discussing the texts and terminology. A critical and analytical approach to the texts will be fostered through group discussion and a final independent written essay on a selected topic.
Students will get knowledge of basic methods of actual art history.
