Learning outcomes
The aim of this course, which combines lectures and seminar activities, is to familiarize students with the basic outlines of the methodology and historiography of art history in Europe and the Anglo-American context, from a perspective that links the earliest historical periods and approaches with their contemporary interpretations in the 20th and 21st centuries. The course will provide an overview of the trajectories of contemporary theoretical and methodological discourse in art history in relation to the discipline's tradition, which is being revitalized and simultaneously revised in new approaches. As a result, students will become familiar with key issues and approaches in art history spanning so-called autonomous and heteronomous methods, with an emphasis on 20th- and 21st-century issues. Through lectures, but above all through reflective reading, students will gain an overview of the disciplinary framework of art history as it unfolded from the 19th to the 21st century within an interconnected and updated historiographical-methodological perspective. This course is followed by the course Methods of Art History 2, which presents selected theoretical concepts and texts in the field of art history from the 20th and 21st centuries from a different perspectiveone that is more analytical compared to the contextual and comparative approach of this course. The basic principle, however, will remain the samethe starting point will be the critical reading of selected texts, through which students will become acquainted with current trends in art history methodology. The content of the seminars will therefore consist of a discussion of selected readings, specially prepared for each session, followed by a joint discussion that critically analyzes the text, as well as
Students will get knowledge of basic methods of art history based in historiographical tradition of the discipline.
