Course content
1. Theory of Illustration; basic graphic techniques; an overview of developments in the field of book culture. 2. Arnošt Procházka and Knihovna Moderní revue (1896 - 1924). 3. Renaissance of the Czech beautiful book (Zdenka Braunerová, Vojtěch Preissig, Karel Dyrynk). 4. Spolek českých bibliofilů / The Association of Czech bibliophiles (from 1908 up to now). 5. Boom of bibliophile movement in the interwar period (Alois Chvála, F. J. Müller, Otto F, Babler, Arno Sáňka,...). 6. Professional publishers (Aventinum, František Botový, František Topič, Družstevní práce, Melantrich,...). 7. The post-war period (the return to the avant-garde), book culture after 1948 (merging of printing companies, closing down small publishers, quality replaced by quantity). 8. Phenomenon of exile publishers after 1968. 9. Bibliophile editions after 1989.

Learning outcomes
The seminar is focused on the issue of book culture of the end of the 19th century and of the entire 20th century. It will deal with amateur book designers and professional publishers and with their efforts to a beautiful book, as well as with their communication with the artists participating in the visual accompaniment of books.
A deeper understanding of book culture of the 20th century and of the main terminology, the knowledge of key personalities of the bibliophile movement.
Prerequisites
Lectures are designed for students of History of Fine Arts.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance

25 minutes oral presentation, submission of presentation in written form. The topic of the presentation: Changes in visual accompaniments of one literary work.
