Výstupy z učení
This course consolidates the knowledge about language acquisition and its consequences for early reading in a range of communities. It systematically studies the function and development of literacy in various cultures and educational systems. The course also reveals the latest tools in early literacy material design and evaluation. Students gain first-hand experience in this field through a book project, spanning the length of the entire course. The knowledge about various aspects of early reading in various cultures will be put to use in designing early literacy materials for a number of languages. The materials may range from alphabet books, early dictionaries, storybooks, to interactive e-books.

Students will be assessed by: 30%: Survey and presentation detailing the literacy practices and visual culture of the target language chosen for the book project. Assignments may include illustrating a research question that is of general interest, proposing a research design that addresses this question, writing a review on a specific topic, and generating a model that could explain the possible findings. 50%: Book project creating a single literacy material to for a language of choice (less familiar languages are expected to be the target). The project requires close collaboration between the linguist and the illustrator - each taking responsibility for the relevant part of the project. 20%: Testing suite will be a collection of additional materials that come with the book project aimed to test and evaluate effectiveness of the chosen project. Students are expected to familiarize themselves with curriculum design and evaluation so that they can collect structured feedback from the language communities about the book project, enabling future improvement of the material.
