The Philippines is a young, dynamically developing society with around 115 million inhabitants and is located in an important geographical position in the Indo-Pacific. Not least due to the increasing labor migration from the Philippines to Europe, including the Czech Republic, our relations with the Southeast Asian country have recently become closer. The aim of this course is to give a detailled overview about the modern history of the Philippines and the political, economic and societal developments since the early 20th century. The course is designed as an introductory lecture series (hybrid format) for all students interested in the Philippines (no previous knowledge required): Experts from the Philippines and Europe will share their expertise in online and in-person classes. Thematically, the course will cover history, domestic and foreign politics, economics, culture, and society of the Philippines. The course begins with a lecture on the struggle for independence from Spanish and American Colonialism and the Japanese occupation during the Second World War. It will be followed by lectures on the political, economic and social developments since the 1950s until today. Specific lectures will deal with the South China Sea dispute and labour migration from the Philippines to Europe and other continents. In this context, the situation of the Filipino minority in the Czech Republic, a growing community, will be discussed.
