In this course, we will explore the political systems and landscapes of the diverse countries that make up the dynamic and rapidly changing Indo-Pacific region, including China, India, Pakistan, Japan, South and North Korea, and Australia as well as the Southeast Asian nations. Through a mix of lectures (including by invited guest speakers), discussions, and student presentations (topic of your choice), we will examine the various political systems, ideologies, and institutions of selected Indo-Pacific countries. Distinguishing between democratic, semi-democratic and authoritarian systems, we will explore topics such as the degree of political participation, competition between political parties, the system of checks and balances, the impacts of nationalism as well as contemporary challenges like environmental issues or territorial conflicts. By the end of this course, you will have a comprehensive understanding of the political systems and dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region, including the complex interplay between domestic and regional politics, and be able to critically analyze current events and issues in the region.
