This course introduces China as a multi-ethnic and "multi-national" state comprising 56 minzu (ethnic groups). While the Han represent the majority, this course directs students' attention to the other 55 minzu, identified as "minority nationalities" (shaoshu minzu). A multidisciplinary approach is adopted for this course, incorporating sources from anthropology, history, ethnic studies, and cultural studies. Throughout the term, students are encouraged to discuss their own ethnic experiences and compare minority issues in China with similar cases globally. Students will be introduced not only to the history and culture of these groups but also to the evolution of China's ethnic minority policiesspecifically the shift from "the unity of the Chinese nationalities" to "the common consciousness of the Chinese nation." All lectures and examinations will be conducted in English.
