This course is designed to give students a general introduction to Korean society and urban space in Korea with a focus on the rapid transition from traditional conditons to the post-modern era. Korean society and space have changed very rapidly, driven by a series of interrelated processes on the level of economics, politics, culture, society and locally as well as globally contingent forces. The task of this course is to understand the underlying processes and the peculiar character of the interplay between Korean society, culture, and urban space. Thus, the course introduces: 1. Korean traditions and their transformations. 2. The changing socio-spatial characteristics of Korean economic & urban growth. 3. Urban & economic development processes and forces driving these processes. 4. The rise and fall of the Korean cultural industry (K-pop, K-drama, and K-movie). 5. The concept of compressed modernity.
