Course content
1st Introductory lesson - Familiarity with the course of the course, its e-learning version, responsibilities and evaluation 2nd Tradition - Model of "religion" in the tumbler environment, traditional Chinese religious concepts, religion and the Chinese state, the historical development of Chinese religion, orthodoxy-Heterodoxy 3rd Modernity - Western intellectual influences in Chinese environment, the construction of the term "religion", a modification of Chinese religious policy, the development of Chinese religion from the arrival of Europeans in r.1978, science-religion-superstition 4th Religious scene and the religious policy of the PRC - Situation after 1978, the religious revival in China, the basic elements of contemporary China's religious policy, major events and controversies 5th Common base of Chinese religion - Folk religion, family and ancestors, the calendar holidays and festivals, the role of the state, seeking harmony 6th Original Chinese religion and religiousness - The current status of Chinese Taoism, feng shui, local cults, traditional medicine, "martial" art 7th Confucius in contemporary China - Confucian fever, New Confucianism, state ideology, the cult of the state, patriotism, "harmonious society" 8th Buddhism - Organization, experience and influence in society, or pilgrimage tourism? Learning outcomes
The course will address the religious life of today's residents of Chinese cultural space. It will aim to clarify the situation from the onset of economic reforms and social changes beginning at the end of the 70th let 20 century to the present. Chinese religious scene and its development will be set in historical, political, social and cultural contexts. The course will range across religious traditions (Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, Islam, new religious movements, popular religiosity, the state cult, etc.) and across regions (the PRC, Tibet, Xinjiang, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Chinese abroad). One of the key issues will be an understanding of the religious policies of today's Chinese political representation, as well as the causes and contexts of which this policy is based.
