The course introduces students to Chinese grammar from a comparative and theoretical perspective. The course provides an in-depth treatment of a range of grammatical constructions. Students will acquire the skills in identifying grammatical patterns and articulating grammatical differences in a precise and concise manner. We will draw data from Mandarin, Cantonese, and other Chinese dialects. The course covers the following topics: ? Noun Phrase ? Verb Phrase ? Questions ? Coordination and subordination

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment: (1) Attendance and class participation (20%): Students must not miss more than 2 classes. Students are expected to actively participate in class discussions. (2) Written and oral assignments (30%) (3) Term paper (50%): Students are required to submit a research paper based one of the topics covered in class.
