Learning outcomes
The course aims to introduce students to the theory and practice of Chinese brush calligraphy. In the theoretical preparation, students will first learn a brief history of this art form and its role in Chinese culture. Then, the presentation will focus on the distinctive calligraphic features of the chosen writing style, specifically the regular script (kaishu). The practical part of the class involves rewriting selected Chinese poems. In the process, students try to reproduce as faithfully as possible the artistic renditions of poems by renowned Chinese calligraphers. Emphasis is placed on the correct brush stroke with the necessary amount of ink and on maintaining the proportional distribution of the individual elements of the Chinese characters. Practicing calligraphic writing techniques is also a mental exercise in which students learn to calm their minds. For the lessons, students will need Chinese painting brushes (1x small, 1x medium, 1x large), Chinese painting paper (in a roll), and Chinese painting ink, which are available at art supply stores.
