|
The course introduces students to sociological thinking about society. Through selected topics and current data on the population of the Czech Republic, it shows the transformation of social institutions after 1989. The aim of the course is not only to familiarize students with the realities of contemporary Czech society, but also to introduce basic sociological concepts, trends and authors. The course is divided into thematic blocks, each of which is devoted to a lecture and a seminar focused on discussing current data. The teacher strives for students to communicate knowledge on the topic found from publicly available sources (e.g. public opinion surveys, professional periodicals and book publications) to each other in the seminar part of the lesson. In addition to the required literature, other sources of information are professional journals: Social Studies, Sociological Journal, Biograf, Our Society, Demography, a journal for population development research, Political Science Review, Religio: A journal for religious studies, Media Studies, publications of the Czech Statistical Office and the Institute of Sociology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (available in pdf format on their websites), CVVM press releases, etc. Topics of lectures: Definition of sociology Sociological paradigms Culture Religion Groups and social control Socialization Marriage and family Social deviation Social stratification Poverty

The course ends with a credit and an exam. Students receive credit for continuous work during the semester. The prerequisite for successful completion of the course is preparation for class (knowledge of the assigned text) and active discussion of the topic in the seminar part of the class. Readiness for the class can be randomly determined by written test at the beginning of the class. Students bring the assigned text with them to class, preferably in printed form. The course literature is chosen to be generally available in libraries or is Physical presence in class does not automatically mean that the requirements are met - in the case of student is not prepared, the instructor may assign make-up work as in the case of physical absence. Completion of such an assignment is mandatory for the student. The students participate in the content of the lessons by presenting the content of selected supplementary literature chosen according to their own interest (choice of topics will take place at the beginning of the semester so that all topics are covered). Each student is is part of a team that becomes the supervisor of one selected topic area to which presentation. The presentation should include key information from the assigned compulsory texts on the topic and additional information from the extension literature. Each learner shall, at the beginning of the semester The student will choose one such title to include in the class presentation. The presenting team must be able to answer additional questions from classmates and the instructor on the topic. A condition for taking the examination is obtaining credit (at the end of the teaching part of the semester). The examination is conducted in written form in the electronic learning system NEO. In order to pass the exam, a minimum of 65% of the total number of points must be obtained. In case the student has not completed the course and is enrolled in it repeatedly, he/she must again meet the requirements for both credit and the exam (unless otherwise agreed upon with the instructor at the beginning of the semester).
