Course content
The course introduces students to the context of religious spiritualities, spiritual experience in a globalized world, new forms of religious communication in postmodernity, and the interaction of diverse religious experiences. It provides insight into the European perception of religious centers, the emergence of missionary centers of world religions in Europe, and the return of polytheism in Europe and America during the second half of the 20th century. The course emphasizes systematic study of individual religious spiritualities, the various forms of initiation into spiritual experience, and comparative perspectives on the religious pedagogy of different traditions. Interreligious dialogue is presented as an integral part of religious spiritualities, particularly the dialogue between Christian and non-Christian traditions. New religious movements in society are introduced as a sign of the times. Course topics: Religion of the modern individual: introduction Typology and characteristics of new religions New religions emerging from Christianity, Indian traditions, and Islam Religions without explicit dependence on world religious systems New religions and collective violence: case study I New religions and collective violence: case study II New religions and collective violence: case study III Implicit religion: political, economic, and cultural systems Principles of information sharing in crisis situations: Waco 1993 Group communication dynamics in a closed religious community Reflection on student projects Final recommendations for practice and concluding summary
