The course Ethical Dilemmas introduces students to understanding situations in which an individual or group is faced with a decision between two or more options that have moral consequences; choosing one of these options may be difficult or uncomfortable. Students are guided to develop competencies in understanding and weighing values, applying moral principles, and considering the consequences of actions. Ethical dilemmas are studied in the context of the workplace, healthcare, science, education, politics, and personal relationships. Students learn the main features of ethical dilemmas, such as value conflicts, uncertain outcomes, subjective decision-making, and moral reasoning. Students are introduced to the basic principles and steps for resolving dilemmas, which include: gathering relevant information, identifying values and moral principles, recognizing value conflicts, considering all options, evaluating possible consequences, consulting, making a decision, monitoring the situation afterward, reflecting on the decision and practice, and taking responsibility for the decision made. Ethical dilemmas are presented as complex problems, often resolved based on limited information and under time pressure. Course content: Three domains of applied ethics Application of ethical theories in practice Theories of moral foundations Strategies for coping with ethical dilemmas Cross-cultural differences in ethical values Interreligious differences in ethical values Tolerance as a principle of applied ethics Case study analysis I Case study analysis II Case discussion I Case discussion II Case discussion III Ethical perspectives in interreligious dialogue
