Course content
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of academic research?procedures and rules for generating and verifying scientific knowledge?and equips them with the basic knowledge required to conduct research focused on message analysis. The course covers not only the general principles of social science methodology but also the specific phases of preparing and conducting studies designed to address issues related to crisis events. It emphasizes the practical aspects of research, and students acquire concrete methods for quantitative and qualitative document analysis. The course highlights the importance of the preparatory phase of research, setting objectives, formulating research questions, and choosing an appropriate research design, as well as procedures for data collection and analysis. Empirical skills are practiced through the implementation of a pilot research study. The course provides students with essential knowledge for writing an empirical master?s thesis and prepares them for independent empirical work in their field of study. Course content: Scientific knowledge generation ? methodology of social sciences Mixed methods: combining quantitative and qualitative document analysis Preparing empirical research ? from topic to problem; research objectives and formulation of research questions Empirical research design ? research strategy proposal, preparation of a research project Representativeness ? research unit and sample selection Quantitative methods of text analysis ? content analysis Quantitative content analysis ? preparation of coding manual, data collection (coding), analysis and interpretation of data Quantitative analysis methods ? frequency linguistics, automated coding Qualitative methods of text analysis ? semiotic analysis (first, second, third level of coding) Grounded theory Qualitative methods of text analysis ? structural analysis, narrative analysis Final research report ? data interpretation Presentation and defense of developed research projects

Successful completion of the course requires the preparation of a final analytical research report on the findings of the team-conducted study, with a length of approximately 5,000 words. Students are expected to be continuously prepared for each class. Preparedness includes the ongoing completion of assigned practical tasks within the group-based, semester-long research project, as well as familiarity with the required literature.
