Learning outcomes

The course focuses on religious education in leisure-time settings and on ways of working with the spiritual, value-oriented, and personal development dimension of leisure-time activities for children and young people. Students will become familiar with how leisure time can provide a space for the development of relationships, values, faith, spirituality, responsibility, service, and meaningful life orientation. Attention will be paid to different types of leisure-time programmes and events for children and young people. Students will be guided to distinguish between the general educational, value-oriented, and religious dimensions of these activities and to reflect sensitively on their appropriateness with regard to the age, experience, needs, and life situation of participants. Emphasis will be placed on ensuring that programmes of religious education in leisure time support the holistic development of children and young people, respect their freedom and dignity, and at the same time create space for spiritual growth, value formation, and community.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to analyse the needs of the target group and design appropriate leisure-time activities with a religious, spiritual, or value-oriented dimension, particularly in the context of the local Church, parish, school, or another educational institution. Students will also be able to identify and justify the spiritual and value-oriented aims towards which leisure-time activities may be directed, and to reflect on their appropriateness with regard to the age, experience, freedom, and dignity of the participants.

Assessment methods and criteria

Student performance, Seminar Work
To successfully complete the course, students are required to actively participate in classes. Active participation includes involvement in discussions, practical examples, shared reflection, and work on activity proposals. Any absence for serious reasons must be properly excused and will be compensated by written completion of the assigned tasks. As part of the course completion, students will prepare a proposal for a short activity demonstrating how religious education and the development of spiritual or value-oriented themes can be incorporated into leisure-time settings. The activity may be designed for different target groups and may focus on various types of content; the specific requirements will be clarified during the seminar. Students with an individual study plan Students with an individual study plan will complete the course through self-study of the materials provided in the study support and written completion of the assigned tasks. They will also submit a written proposal for an activity focused on the development of spiritual or value-oriented themes in leisure time and, by prior arrangement, present it to the teacher.
