Course content
Features of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods research. The research planning process; phases and functions of research; specifics of preparing and conducting qualitative inquiries. Formulation of the research problem, aims, and research questions in qualitative research (in social work). Characteristics of the main qualitative research designs. Specifics of sampling and participant selection. Data collection methods and data analysis procedures in qualitative research. Drawing conclusions and conducting the discussion in qualitative research. Validity and reliability in qualitative research. Ethics in qualitative research. Software for qualitative data analysis.

Learning outcomes
Students will acquire basic skills in qualitative research. They can discuss the possibilities of scientific research using qualitative research (primarily in the field of social work). Students will understand the theoretical foundations and acquire basic skills related to the formulation of aims and research questions and the choosing appropriate methods of data collection and methods of processing of data in the field of qualitative research.
Students will have basic theoretical knowledge in the field of qualitative research. Students will be able to formulate a research problem, research goals and questions from the point of view of qualitative research in the field of social work. Students will acquire and demonstrate knowledge of how to work with data in qualitative research. Students will be able to choose the right design for their research paper. Students can characterize the basic methods of obtaining and processing qualitative research data.

Basics of quantitative research.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Student performance

1. Active participation in lectures and seminars. 2. Successful completion of the oral examination based on the specified requirements: a) preparation and justification of a qualitative methodological design for a selected research problem (topics may relate to the student's Master's thesis); b) identification and presentation of a scholarly article based on qualitative research findings; c) answering a question from qualitative research theory (knowledge is expected at the level covered in the course presentations). Students with specific educational needs will have the course completion requirements adapted according to the nature of their disability. Adjustments may include extended time for written tests and assignments, modification of grading criteria for written work, and, where relevant, adjustments to the classroom environment and required study aids.
