Jan Amos Comenius (1592-1670) is best known as the father of modern pedagogy. However, his pedagogical thought was rooted in a philosophical and theological foundation, which Comenius himself regarded as the most important part of his work and which contemporary interpreters increasingly view as the most relevant aspect of his thought today. This course will therefore present Comenius as an original philosopher and theologian who, within the context of the late Renaissance and early modernity, developed a distinctive philosophical-theological system that united both Aristotelian and Platonic philosophical traditions with Christian Trinitarian metaphysics. This synthesis enabled Comenius to combine the modern emphasis on human subjectivity and creativity with a holistic vision of a participatory order of reality. The core of the course will consist of collective readings of Comenius?s philosophical, theological, and mystical texts (in Czech translation), which demonstrate the uniqueness of his pansophic synthesis.
