Course content
|
The origins and development of the Church: the Apostolic and Post-Apostolic periods. Key features of the religious mindset of people in the Hellenistic period. Gnosticism. Manichaeism. Mithraism. The Jewish background of early Christianity. Jews in the ancient world. The spread of Christianity and its persecution. The Constantinian shift and its impact on the structure of the state and the Church in late antiquity. The origins of the papacy, key figures and trends in its development up to the time of Gregory the Great. The origins of monasticism. Key figures among the Church Fathers and their works, set within the context of the development of ancient literature and theological thought. Synodality in the ancient Church, illustrated by the great ecumenical councils of antiquity. The Church's relationship to heresies, and the impact of heresies on the development of doctrine. The Migration Period and the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The beginnings of the evangelisation of the Germanic tribes. The Church in the nascent Byzantine Empire. The evangelisation of Europe - the Franks, Germanic peoples, Anglo-Saxons and Slavs. The development of religious and political conditions in Byzantium. The schism between the Eastern and Western Churches. The Cyril and Methodius mission. The Gregorian Reform, the emancipation of the Church and the height of papal power. The Crusades. The Church in the medieval Czech state. The development of new forms of monastic life. The mendicant orders. The struggle between the papacy and imperial power in the Middle Ages. Medieval man, his world and piety. Devotio moderna. The Avignon Papacy and the Great Schism. The Church in the Luxembourg era. Hussitism, the Hussite Wars and the development of the Czech Church in the 15th century. The Councils of Vienne, Constance and Basel; conciliarism.

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the history of the Church in ancient times and the Middle Ages in various manifestations of its life.
