Course content
Lecture blocks and seminars will focus on the following topics: 1. General introduction to the study of sociology. 2. Social action and deviant behaviour from the perspective of major sociological paradigms: a) structural functionalism, b) conflict theory, c) symbolic interactionism, d) phenomenological sociology. The seminar component will run throughout all teaching blocks and will consist of discussions on individual topics and short assignments through which students will explore the applicability of sociology for understanding everyday life and the practice of social work or psychotherapy.

Learning outcomes

Students will gain an understanding of selected core sociological concepts and become familiar with the specific features of sociological thinking and with different sociological perspectives on social and deviant behaviour (including their applicability to reflections on everyday situations and to the practice of social work and psychotherapy). Upon completion of the course, students should be able to describe and explainusing both general definitions and concrete examplesbasic sociological concepts, theories, and selected empirical findings related to the thematic areas covered.

1. Active participation in block-scheduled lectures (delivered online via the Zoom platform or in person in Olomouc). 2. Completion of an online test - knowledge corresponding to the course presentations is expected (using the Moodle system and the Zoom platform; for identification purposes, use of a webcam is required). Students with specific educational needs will have the course completion requirements adapted according to the nature of their disability. Adjustments may include extended time for written tests and assignments, modification of grading criteria for written work, and, where relevant, adjustments to the classroom environment and required study aids.
