Definition of typhlopedagogy as a special educational discipline Basic terminology and foundations of typhlopedagogy Characteristics of visual impairment, its causes and basic classification Specific needs of persons with visual impairment across the life span Areas of support and development of persons with visual impairment Basics of orientation and independent mobility Education of persons with visual impairment Social and vocational inclusion of persons with visual impairment Special educational methods in typhlopedagogy (remediation, compensation, rehabilitation) System of care for persons with visual impairment in education and social services

Learning outcomes
The course Typhlopedagogy is focused on providing a comprehensive overview of the field of typhlopedagogy in several interrelated dimensions. It offers students a basic orientation in the issues concerning persons with visual impairment across different stages of life, from early childhood through school age and adulthood to old age. Furthermore, the course introduces students to the fundamental areas of development and support for persons with visual impairment, in particular self-care, orientation and independent mobility, education, social and vocational inclusion, and the development of persons who become visually impaired later in life, including the development of compensatory mechanisms, training of specific skills, retraining, and visual compensation. An integral part of the course is also familiarisation with special educational methods used in work with persons with visual impairment, especially methods of remediation, compensation, rehabilitation, and comprehensive rehabilitation.
Upon completion of the course, the student will have knowledge of: - the basic concepts and foundations of typhlopedagogy, - the characteristics of visual impairment and its basic classification, - specific needs of persons with visual impairment across the life span, - the main areas of support and development of persons with visual impairment, - basic special educational methods used in typhlopedagogy.

Within the seminars, work with academic texts is expected, followed by professional discussions on current issues. A requirement for successful completion of the course is the preparation of a written reflection or analysis on a selected topic and its subsequent colloquium defence.
