Course content
1. Definition of social care and other related concepts (social policy, social event, social protection, social security, state social support, social assistance, etc.) 2. The social and health situation of an individual 3. Social policy in the social system, its function, basic principles, objects and subjects of social policy 4. Social policy models, social policy model in the Czech Republic 5. State participation in social policy and social welfare legislation in the Czech Republic 6. Diasease and disability as a social event 7. Old age as a social event 8. Unemployment as a social event 9. Social events related to the family 10. Poverty and social exclusion 11. Social protection of children, adolescents, adults, elderly people, people with disabilities, mental illness, minorities, ethnic groups, migrants and other socially disadvantaged people 12. Basic types and forms of social services 13. Social service facilities and typology of social services according to target groups 14. Social work in health care and other fields 15. Approaches to social work with minorities, dilemmas in social work 16. Specifics of social work with people with disabilities and mental illnesses 17. Multidisciplinarity in social care 18. Problems and trends in the development of social care in the Czech Republic and abroad

Learning outcomes
Students will acquire theoretical knowledge about social care. The subject focuses on the interpretation of social problems, contexts and trends, so that the image of social care affects its essential features. It will extend the students' knowledge of the current socio-political measures in the Czech Republic and of the changes during the social transformation of the Czech society. The course deals with the theoretical issues of social policy, social eventsbasic social activities, social services providers. Course also pay particular attention to social prevention, including public health protection of the population. The subject describes the specifics of social work with people with disabilities and mental illnesses, with an emphasis on individual approach to these people and the need for team cooperation.
Student will have the ability to extend the acquired knowledge and use them for independent creative work so that he / she is fully able to succeed not only in the Czech Republic but also within the European Union countries.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance, Seminar Work

Oral exam in groups at the end of semester. Other requirements: a) Seminar paper preparation and its presentation in lectures, b) Self-study.
