Course content
The role of a midwife in child care at ICU - procedures and intensive bed preparation. The course provides a detailed insight into nursing care management, tailoring care; describes the specifics of nursing care for a child under 10 years of age in intensive care: Anatomical and physiological specifics of childhood, parenteral and enteral nutrition, childhood consciousness disorders, respiratory disease in intensive care in children, diabetes mellitus and its complications in childhood, paediatric cardiology, burns, traumas in childhood, infectious illnesses in childhood, childhood intoxication. Analgotherapy in childhood. Hypothermia in paediatrics, a condition leading to hypothermia, preparation of the child and the environment for hypothermic treatment. Child transport, co-operation with emergency services. Dying in children's ICUs, supporting and educating parents.

Learning outcomes
The course provides students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills about nursing for children under 10 years of age with failing or a failure of basic life functions, their support or substitution. It is focused particularly on specific life-saving procedures and adequate (complicated pre-existing) care for children in intensive and resuscitation care.
Upon completion of the course the student will be able to work in the paediatric department and provide a highly specialized care for a child under 10 years of age. Students will be able to prepare and provide intensive care.
