Course content
Enteral, parenteral nutrition in intensive care. The importance of quality nutrition in critical situations. Indications, modes of administration, types of nutrition, possible complications. Parenteral nutrition of a patient in intensive care. Indications, methods of application, types of preparations, complications and their prevention, instrumentation and laboratory monitoring. The position of the nutrition therapist in the nursing team. Specifics of nutrition of pregnant, breastfeeding women, new-borns and women with specific diseases. Diabetes mellitus in pregnancy, gestational diabetes mellitus.

Learning outcomes
The course provides students with comprehensive information on nutrition as the basic biological need, its importance and influence on the overall health of the human being. It deals with the risks of eating disorders (malnutrition, excessive nutrition) and with specific methods of nutrition in critical situations, especially in obstetrics and gynaecology. It focuses on difference in dietary needs between pregnant women, breastfeeding women, new-borns and women with specific illnesses.
The student will be familiar with the subject matter and will be able to provide care in the area of nutrition of a patient with specific needs.
