Course content
Introduction to methodology (defining the field, the characteristics of science, evaluation of scientific theories, scientific literature, dynamics of theory testing) Concepts, systems, research plans. Population and sampling (sample, population, methods of selection of participants) Variables (dependent and independent variable, SOR scheme, adverse effects, relationships between variables, control variables) Research Design 1 (experiment, quasi-experiment, factorial designs) Research Design 2 (correlation studies, ex-post-facto, development designs, surveys) Methods of data collection. Statistical methods (descriptive statistics, statistical tests) Fundamentals of psychometry (scales of measurement, normal distribution, standard scores) Validity, reliability, standardization. Ethical and other aspects of psychological research and publishing (research, rights of participants, informed consent, the responsibility of the researcher, the possibilities for publication)

Learning outcomes
Methodology 1 - quantitative approach In this course, students will get familiar with the theory of scientific research methods, logic of this method of learning, ethical issues, furthermore, they will get oriented with the basic concepts and methodological approaches. Other topics: the problems of modeling and reduction in psychological research, definitions and operationalizing, formulation of research problem, questions and hypotheses, the preparation of research design, diferences between quantitative and qualitative approach, methods of sampling, a representative sample, the population, basic quantitative research designs (questionnaire surveys, correlation studies, developmental studies, experiments and quasi-experiments, etc..), Data acquisition methods (clinical, questionnaire, test, etc.) including the measurement of variables and scaling, issues of standardization, validity and reliability.
In this course students should acquire a basic knowledge of all main phases of scientific research and its specifics in the social science. Students should be able to design and implement a simple research project with all the necessities (review of the theoretical sources, formulation of a research problem, questions and hypothesis, choosing of appropriate research design, choosing of a sampling method and target population, choosing of adequate methods for gathering and analyses of data.
Prerequisites
Subject METD1 is one of the compulsory subjects (categoy A) There are no prerequisites. Successful completion of METD1 is a condition for these follow-up courses: METD2 and METD3.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam, Seminar Work

Studying of compulsory literature and ppt lecture presentations. Final examination is a combination of written test (the form of a, b, c, d; 25 points) and the completion of 3 tasks using the LMS Unifor (40 points in total). Further details, requirements and deadlines are part of the initial tutorial.
