Course content

The course has eleven lessons in eleven weeks + a summer school of 5 day. The tenth week is vowed to this summer course that will take place in Olomouc. The plan is as follows: 1. Learning outcomes
|
The course concerns a moodle course online with a series of 12 lectures in the summer semester of 2023 that aims to highlight the issues of the reception of Dutch-language literature in the period 1945-1990. The subject of the course will be reception in the Czech republic, Hungary, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia. Attention will also be paid to the reception of Dutch-language literature on a global level, in the GDR (as a conduit) and in the USSR (as the then "political leader" of the region). Key elements of the course include: - understanding the issues of translation and publishing for translators (for the Czech Republic: Ela Každová, Olga Krijtová, Jiří Elman and others) - the role of the official ideology of Socialist realism and of censorship - ties of publishers and translators within the socialist bloc - non-translations The course is a joint activity of the departments of Dutch Studies in Belgrade, Bratislava, Debrecen, Ljubljana, Olomouc and Poznań, with the cooperation of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences in Amsterdam and the department of Dutch Studies in St Petersburg. The lectures are given by staff from all these institutions.
Obtain better understanding of the influence of conditions such as censorship, ideology, financial conditions on the reception of Dutch-language literature in a (semi-)totalitarian society. Knowledge of the reception of Dutch-language literature in Central Europe.

Prerequisites
|
Good knowledge of Dutch at least at CEFR B2 level. General overview of Dutch literature. Participation in the course, preferably also in the summer school in April 2023.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Essay, Seminar Work
Systematic participation in all classes that will take place online on Fridays, as well as in the 5-day summer school in Olomouc. Carrying out the assignments at the lessons and writing a final paper of 10 standard pages of text (18,000 characters incl. spaces and punctuation).
