Course content
During the course, we look at each period at the hand of various important texts. Course schedule: 1) Learned poetry - Constantijn Huygens, Hofwijck; 2) Literature and Art - Karel van Mander, Schilder-Boeck; 3) Golden Century Writers - Catharina Questiers and Cornelia van de Veer, Lauwerstryt; 4) Fictional Worlds - Robinsoniades in the Service of the Patriots; 5) The struggle between the Classics and the Moderns - Poëtenstryd; 6) Abolitionism - Nicolaas Simon van Winter, Monzongo of Koninglyke Slaaf; 7) The first novel in letters - Aagje Deken & Betje Wolff, Sara Burgerhart; 8) The Great Beginning of the 19th Century - Willem Bilderdijk, De ondergang der eersten waereld; 9) Young Holland - Piet Paaltjens (François HaverSchmidt), Snikken en Grimlachjes and Thet Oera Linda Bok; 10) The Flemish Movement - Hendrik Conscience, De Leeuw van Vlaenderen; 11) Feminism in Romanticism - Geertruida Bosboom-Toussaint, Het huis Lauernesse; 12) Critique of colonialism and the first modern novel - Multatuli, Max Havelaar.

Learning outcomes
The course deepens the knowledge of older literature that was provided to students during their bachelor study. Students are introduced to the most important authors of medieval and renaissance literature in the original version and in modern Dutch adaptation.
A thorough survey of older Dutch and Flemish literature from 1650 till 1880. Ability to work with older literary texts.
Prerequisites
Presence in the lessons (maximum 2 absences during the semester). Knowledge of Dutch at level C1 CEFR

Assessment methods and criteria
Essay

Presence during the lessons (maximum 2 absences per semester). Homework and Presentations. During the semester 5 books in Dutch should be read.
