Approximately 60% of young adults, 80% of the middle-aged and 90% of Czechs over age 65 have periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition that encompasses both inflammation of the gingiva (gingivitis) and the extension to the underlying tissues of the periodontium (periodontitis). To select an efficient treatment of periodontal disease it is necessary to understand the biochemical and cellular mediators of this disease, as well as new functional medicines for its treatment. Students will learn the etiology of periodontitis: the function of the saliva, the role of mechanical and biological irritants, and consequences of pathological alterations in the metabolism of oral cavity cells.

Students will acquire knowledge of the causes of inflammatory diseases of gingiva and periodontium with an overview on the treatment of these diseases based on application of pharmacologically active substances and/or drugs.
