Course content
1 Religion - Culture - Society: Religion as a subject of social sciences and humanities, reflection of religion, religion in the views on culture and society, relation between religion and culture / society 2 Definition of religion: substantive, functional and symbolic definitions. Typology of religiosity. Religiosity and culture. 3 Possibilities and limits of the examination and measurement of religiosity, the application of qualitative and quantitative methods. 4 Religion in modern society: A. Comte, Karl Marx and É. Durkheim. 5 Myth and ritual. Religion and culture, religion and art. 6 Max Weber. The share of religion in the development of modern capitalism and odkouzlení world. 7 Secularization - expectations and reality. The transition from traditional to modern society - the loss of social significance of religion. 8 Sociology of knowledge and religion. Social construction and the role of religion. 9 Conversions. Themes conversion and a process model. 10 New religious movements. Study and meanings of the new religiosity. 11 The revitalization of religion - a new religious discourse. 12 Deprivatization of religion.

Learning outcomes
The course deals with the relationship of religion, culture and society. Religion is seen as a specific sphere of human action, which refers to the transcendent. The modernization process pushed religion from the culture and made it a relic of the "mainstream" society and system theory religion subsystem also left to languish in addition to differentiating dynamic economics, politics and science. Secularization should bring about a privatization of religion or even its end.
Student will understand the relationship between religion, culture and society. Student will be able to interpretive modernization process and its implications for religion. Student will be able to define secularization. Student will be able to describe the privatization of religion.

Assessment methods and criteria
Seminar Work

Active participation on seminars, cooperation , final report writting, final knowledge test.
