Course content
Information technology and its classification. Types of computer networks based on several aspects, advantages and disadvantages, network operating systems. Structure and operation of a computer network (access rights, file attributes, Novell NetWare-structure of directories, disc mapping). Internet - characteristics, Internet as a source of information. Computer viruses and protection against them, types of viruses classified based on several aspects, anti-virus programmes, signs of viruses, basics of safe work. Operating systems - characteristics, classification, MSDOS, superstructure of Windows 3.1X, WINDOWS 95/98/2000/Me/XP, operation, characteristics, differences, multitasking. Basic classification of hardware. Application software - classification and characteristics of programmes. Peripheries (printers, scannners, etc.). Multimedia. Office programme packages. Graphic programme. Compression programmes - purpose, classification, characteristics. Presentation programmes.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students should be able to: define basic terms used in IT and explain relations between them; be familiar with basic structure of computer networks, and with computer hardware and software.

Basic knowledge of informatics and computer skills at secondary school level

Assessment methods and criteria
Dialog, Seminar Work

Requirements imposed on students: 80% attendance rate at seminars, passing a credit test followed by a discussion about its results.
